AMS

Kelly and Sidney of Assisted Moving Services came today and packed up a multitude of boxes.

Dick sorted out the books on the living room bookshelf, and he also worked on the geocaching stuff downstairs.  I did some picture and scrapbooking sorting downstairs also.

 They took away the boxes for things that we are donating.  The things that we want to keep are stacked up in the gray barn.

 Today my bedroom looks empty - no pictures, books or collectible boxes!

The dining room bookshelves are void of books - what a lot of sorting and packing.  They took all of the electronics that were in the dining room too.

They also worked downstairs, rearranging things for the picture-taking next week.  It was a lot of hard work, and next week they'll be back for more.

Lark Lawn called to tell us the tractor is fixed and ready to be picked up.  We hopped in the Jeep, hooked up the trailer and picked it up, and then Dick mowed part of the yard that's been bugging him.

Monday they'll be bringing along more muscle to move the treadmill and the stationery bike.

We have a busy weekend coming up - tomorrow Dick works at the Visitor Center, and I'll be home with the garage door opener people.  Our opener broke on last Tuesday when we came home from the gym.

Saturday we're having lunch with my high school friend Freda.  She lives on Whidbey Island in the State of Washington.  Her step-mother died recently and wanted some of her ashes scattered in the Bay.  We're meeting her for  lunch at Amical.

Sunday we're volunteering for the MEA-R at the  Parade of Homes.  The house we'll be at is in Glen Arbor.

Monday we'll be looking at condos with our agent Beccy - we're hoping to find one that we really like in a good location.

Tuesday is the meeting of the MEA-R at the offices on Barlow St.

Wednesday we'll probably do more sorting!

Mr. Appliance and Ex-Cookbook Collection

The refrigerator repairman came to fix the fan motor.  We sat around and waited for him - he was an hour and a half late!

While we were waiting, I sorted through my collection of cook books - what to keep, what to donate, what to sell, what to pitch.  Whew, that's a lot of books!  So the dining room table is stacked high with books, and Kelly will be here tomorrow to deal with them all.

So the cookbooks are sorted and the fridge is fixed.

Unexpected Pleasures

You could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw this post today.  Such memories it brought back of good old Belleville and Edgemont School!  Chris was a delightful boy, very bright and polite.  He was in my second grade class the year that his parents divorced, and it was a very sad time for him.  He stayed on top of his school work, and was one of the best students in the class.

• Evelyn M. Larabell I don't know the people in the pix, but since I'm writing to you, I wanted to thank you for the part you had in my son's success. You had him during such a major critical part of his life. Your efforts with him did not go unnoticed nor unappreciated. He's now 34, married, expecting a son in Sept., is a programmer for Bosch Corp. and happily married. Thank you sooooooo much for all you did for him! Sincerely, Ev. P.S.   Nancy Steiger Wow, Ev - I just noticed your post - guess I'm not much of a regular. Thank you for your kind, kind words! It's wonderful to hear about how well Chris is doing - and you get to be a Grandma! You have to realize that Chris came with built in abilities and qualities which I am sure he got from your careful parenting.  Dick and I are fine here in Traverse City.   Kelly came this morning to tour the property and get an idea of what needs to be done to get the house ready.  She seems capable of helping us with a successful transition.  I think that we will work well together.

Chip is Home; Farewell Wayne

Chip is home from the hospital!  Laurie says he is really feeling too chipper - he keeps forgetting the walker he's supposed to be using.  All seems well - I know he's glad to be home with Nurse Laurie.

My cousin Wayne has passed away.  I actually knew Wayne's siblings better than I knew him,.

 Jack, Lavona, and Juanita were much closer to my age. Jack was always my favorite cousin, and Juanita actually lived in Belleville for a while - and I had her daughter Linda in my second grade class at one point!   I knew him, of course,  just not as well.  His family is devastated - his nieces thought the world of him and will miss him terribly.  Another sad time for another great family.

KANITZ, Wayne Williams - Age 86, of Fenton, died Thursday, June 6, 2013.

 Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, June 10, 2013 at Hartland United Methodist Church, 10300 Maple Road, Hartland. Rev. Ray Lanning officiating. Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd, Fenton Sunday from 1-4 and 5-8 PM and at church Monday from 10:00 AM until time of service. 

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Wayne W. Kanitz Memorial Fund. Wayne was born August 3, 1926 in Lincoln Park, the son of Elby and Lela (Williams) Kanitz. 

He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He married Marcella Vivian Fleck September 29, 1950 in Milan. A proud soldier and golden gloves champ, Wayne served in the Army from 1945 until 1948 in the occupation force of Germany after WWII. An accomplished athlete , and community advocate, Wayne enjoyed making wooden toys for children and served on the board at Hartland United Methodist Church.

 He retired with 30 years of service at the Milford GM Proving Grounds and had been retired for 32 years. Loving husband to Marcella V. (Fleck) Kanitz; father of James (Sherrie) , Howard, and Ken (Vivian); grandfather of 11 grandchildren, 2 of whom preceded him in death, Lori Michelle Kanitz and Ryan James Bucco.

 From a family of 10, Wayne is survived by sisters, Juanita Mason and Lavona Dennison; brother, Jack Kanitz; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Beccy the Realtor

We've taken the first step toward eventually selling our river house.  This whole process will be highly charged emotionally for both of us, but we realize that right now is a good time to get it done.

Today we met with Beccy, who is going to be listing our property.  We took her on a tour of the whole house, and a golf cart ride around the whole property.  She seems to be a real people person, enthusiastic, hard-working, and energetic.  I think she will do her best to help us.

She'll be coming back next Tuesday to tell us what we need to do on our end to prepare the house to be sold.

We are both a little freaked out by what lies ahead.  Saturday morning Kelly is coming to help us get started downsizing and organizing all of our multitudinous "stuff".  I'm counting on her to be very helpful.

Today Chip is having hip replacement surgery at the Jupiter Medical Center.  He seems anxious to have it done, because he has been having a lot of discomfort from it.  We are wishing him all good things and great results.

Dylan's friend Tucker and his family have rented a place in the Keys for a month.  The parents invited Tucker's friends to come down and join them for the first week.  So Dylan's first great summer experience is a vacation in the Keys!  They plan on tubing, kayaking, and who knows what all.  What a nice opportunity for Dylan!

Susie and Tim have been worried about her Dad for months now.  They spent weeks and weeks with him in Florida this winter.  His death is not a surprise, but as we all know, expected or unexpected, it's still the hardest thing.

We sympathize with Tim and Susie.

In Memory of Paul R. Metters June 5, 1922 - June 2, 2013 Obituary Paul R. Metters, 90, of Coldwater, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at his home. He was born in Ithaca, MI on June 5, 1922 to Harry and Grace (Dickerson) Metters. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1939. During World War II he served in the U. S. Army in North Africa, Italy and the Philippines. On May 3, 1946 he married Anne Feichtenbiner in Ithaca. They moved to Coldwater in 1962. Paul worked in the mobile home industry for 40 years and retired in 1982 as a Vice President of Redman Industries. After retiring Paul and Anne spent the winters in Lakeland, FL. Paul was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Ithaca and Coldwater. He enjoyed electronics, playing cards, golfing, gardening, cooking and helping his family and friends. Paul is survived by his brother; Lovell (Linda) Metters, his four children; Jerry (Vicky) Metters, Joseph Metters, Susie (Tim) Swedine and Peter (Cheryl) Metters, 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two sisters; Thelma Stahl and Ruth Harrison. Visitation for Paul Metters will be held on Friday, June 7, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the funeral home with Rev. Rene' Whitaker of the First Presbyterian Church in Coldwater officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to CHC Home Health Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.

The 3 Hour Breakfast

We got together this morning with Chris and Dennis at Harrington's by the Bay for breakfast.  We were there for three hours, so it's a good thing they weren't very busy.  I think that all of the sinners were at church ;)

Jim called about Geraldine Biddicome from Big Rapids who remembers Dad and is a member of Jim's church.  He had thought that she was one of our babysitters from 1936 to 1941, but after he talked to her to her this morning, we're not so sure.  Anyway, she's a blast from the past either way.

Dick picketed at the Ad. Bldg. with Shelly and Barb.  It was a pro-teacher picket, of course!

Derek and Carla arrived to camp in the campground in their terrific tent.  Their two dogs, Tortie and Rhino, are very well-behaved, and well-trained.  They are very affectionate pups!  Dick got home soon after D&C arrived.

After nice conversations on the deck, Dick grilled chicken for a really pleasant dinner.

Just in time for dessert - Adam, Melanie, Lydia and Izzy came to see their cousins.  Izzy really loved the dogs - she was entranced!  Everybody loved the ice cream.

Dick had laid a campfire for Derek, and it turned out to be the perfect end to the day for those two families.  It was kind of an early Genfest for them because none of them are going to be able to come in July.

The Old Home Town

Traverse City cruise report:

1. The parking lot at Thirlby Clinic is all torn up.  It was quite a surprise.  It looks like they're working on a new entrance - the steps to the front door have been removed.  They have really done a lot in the two weeks since we've been there.

2. Clinch Park continues to develop in front of our very eyes.  The concession/bath house building is almost finished - it's definitely a unique style of architecture - kind of resembles two double wides.  Oh, that's really too harsh.  Most of the mud has dried up, and there are puzzling circles of concrete with no obvious function.  They must be part of the Milliken Water feature, but it's hard to picture at the moment. I'm sure all will become recognizable someday soon.  The huge, huge piles of sifted soil are being dug into and distributed.  It's still not possible to figure out what it's going to look like. 

3. The marina is slowly filling up.  A couple of the really big boats are moored already.  There are a few more every day that passes.

4.  I would never be able to work at the Grand Traverse Pie Company.  I can't even describe their case full of sweet rolls, cookies, and donuts.  So gooey and delectable looking.  Their breakfast menu is a bit sparse - a far cry from the Omelette Shoppe.

5.  You're never next in line at Meijer.

So this day is starting out as a stone.  Gouty toe for me, trick knee for Dick.  We're having a limping contest.  It's also rainy and kind of dark, damp and gloomy.  We'll have to make our own sunshine today.

I do have a list of condos to go look at later if we get in the mood for a drive.  We also have to limp through the grocery store sometime today.

Another Perfect Day

Another perfect day for a jeep ride.  A cloudless sky, and very moderate temps - ideal.

 After the gym and breakfast at Randy's, Dick got the jeep out, and we were off to the Manton area to find some two tracks.  We were inspired by a new cache put out by the Hosta Hillbillies in honor of Frank, of Frank and Peggy.

It's hard to explain how shocked we were by Frank's passing.  He was a hiker and a biker, and always seemed healthy and fit.  He and Peggy have found over 10,000 caches.  He will be missed.

When this cache popped up last night, we agreed that we needed to rearrange our schedule for this afternoon and make the trip south to snag it. Frank was a person who made a positive impression on everyone he came in contact with. We were shocked when we heard of his sudden and untimely death. He will definitely be missed. We are overwhelmed at the thought of  the effect  his loss must be having on Peggy as well as Cricket. We took nothing, left our pathtag and flashlight. Thanks Hostas for placing it in his memory.

Wow! This was quite an adventure! On this bright sunny spring like (at last) afternoon, we got the Jeep out of the barn and rode down to find the cache placed in Frank Rens' memory. After making that find, we thought a little back roads/two tracks would be fun so we came south on 33 and wound up driving a series of two tracks using an iphone for directions. After a number of attempts to find the road or trail which led to the cache, we gave up and I bushwacked in to GZ. Took nothing, left our pen. Thanks for the fun on a beautiful day.

Caring Fields

Dylan is doing some volunteer work on the weekends at Caring Fields. This is an animal rescue shelter for horses and cats.  Dylan hasn't worked at all with the horses, but he really enjoys his involvement with the cats - even with Henry, who keeps trying to climb the fence!

 The cats have small houses to live in.  They're free to move from house to house any time.  The houses are where the cats are fed and watered, and can seek shelter and find a place to nap.  I think I remember him saying that there are 5 or 6 of the little houses altogether.

 Dylan's main jobs are feeding and watering all of the kitties, petting them and keeping track of all of them.  He's usually there every Saturday morning for four or five hours.

When Dylan started his volunteering, Chip said "Oh now we're going to end up with a kitten!"  But I don't think that will happen.  Then there's Grandpa Dick who delights in telling his friends that Dylan is working in a cat house!  (Heavy sigh.)

Mother's Day 2013

We were going to take a Jeep ride today, but decided it wouldn't be that much fun in the snow!  We did have a nice ride in the other car - out to lunch, and a cell phone call from Tom during our ride - real fun by our standards! 

 I have an avalanche of flowers and plants at home, plus a really sweet bracelet -  Mother's Day is so enjoyable!

The first gift to arrive was this beautiful big planter for the deck.  It has  six or seven different types of   plants - including geraniums, dusty miller, coleus (called redhead!). ivy,  and petunias.  This is really a knock-out pot - so pretty, and ready to just set out on the deck if it ever stops snowing!

That's a family tradition based on my habit of saying "I don't want to put all of my eggs in one basket" every time some dangerous adventure was proposed.

Then FedEX arrived with this gorgeous box of tulips and iris!  The blooms are so dainty and delicate looking - wonderful to behold!

I also love the pretty pink vase - it's the perfect setting for the flowers.  Believe it or not, this gift is also from the eggs and the grand-egg!

50 State Challenge

Max B on the River has put out several Challenge caches.  One of them is for people who have found a cache in all 50 States.  It's located in Niles, so it was a good place to stop on our way home.  Since we were coming from Belleville, it was only not so much out of our way if you really wanted to get there!  We got off I-94 and drove through Decatur and Dowagiac to get there.  Niles is 3 miles from the Indiana border.

We met Maxine for lunch, and then she took us to log the cache.  We really do qualify big time, because we have all 50 States plus the District of Columbia!

We were home by 5 o'clock.

Retiree's Breakfast 2013

It seems as though we go to just one Belleville Teachers Retiree Breakfast every year, even though they meet once a month!  This year was especially fun for some reason - lots of good friends and good conversation.  We really enjoyed Bill and Jan, Ken, Jim M., Kirk, Dan, Dorothy, Kay, Dian, and Hunch.  So good to catch up with everyone - except they're all beginning to look old.  Why is that? 

After breakfast we went caching - it was the perfect day for it.

This winter got to be too much for us so we took a couple of weeks to hunt for Spring and visit our new winter home in Florida. When the temp broke, we came back to our old haunts (pardon the pun). We lived in Belleville for over 40 years and recognize many of the names here, parents and grandparents of some of our students. Thanks for many memories.

This year we discovered what Seasonal Affective Disorder is. A couple of weeks ago, our yard was mostly clear when a storm dumped1 1/2 in of frozen rain and sleet on us. That was it! We loaded the car and went in search of Spring. We didn't find it until Ky. We continued on and drove through the Smokies to find May Apples and Trillium. When the weather cleared, we came back north. We lived and taught in Belleville for 40 years and this park was in our back yard for 20 of them. Our girls worked here summers. Today was a perfect day, not a cloud in the sky and the temp in the 80's. We spent our day reliving memories. This cache popped up on our iPad map and when we saw it was placed by Stan and Ruth, we had to go for it. We are in "da Ville" for the monthly retired teacher's breakfast, staying at a nearby motel. When we saw who placed this baby and why, we had no choice but to snag the smilie that goes with it and shout out our congrats as well. Thanks for the fun!

Farewell Piqua

Ohio is just plain not our favorite State in the Union.  Sooner or later, when we travel, we have to stop over in Ohio.  On the way down to Florida we stopped near Lima, and now on the way home, we stayed in Piqua.  We picked this motel because it's connected to a mall.  We stayed here once on the way down to Florida at Christmastime, and we really enjoyed it.  The motel and the mall were beautifully decorated for the season, and there were lots of people around.

In April, not so much.  The mall was almost totally empty.  We walked around just to see what was there.  They have Penney's and Sears, and something called Elder-Beerman.  And shoe stores - lots of shoe stores. 

The mall echoed with our footsteps - there was hardly anybody around.  We got coffee in the food court and sat down to people-watch.  It was really more of a hall-watch.  We did see about 5 others in the area and that's it.

We went geocaching, and had rotten luck.  More DNFs than finds.  So farewell, Ohio.  We love to leave you.

We ate dinner at Famous Dave's (Home of the Big Slab).  Our waitress was Famous Emily - a cute introduction :)  The food was good, but Famous Emily seated us in a back room, sort of all by ourselves.  We really like to be able to see the other diners - you know, the people watching thing. We had a good time anyway, and Emily was fun.

04/28/2013 You found Chewin' a cud Visit Log We thought there would be a plaque explaining the bull but drew a blank. The restaurant was not open at 6PM on a Sunday, maybe it's out of business. We went to the rib joint instead - good food. The log is too wet to sign. We used a scrap of note paper. View out the back - the big tree is a carrotwood tree - an invasive plant not native to Florida, but it's not doing any harm in our backyard

We were only there for 5 days, but we're totally in love with it, and we'll be back in the fall.  Still plenty of work to do, but lots of time to do it :)
